Watch for These 3 Warnings That Your Water Heater Needs Repairs

Monday, July 9th, 2018 by Michele Alicky

If you take care of the water heater that provides your household with its necessary daily hot water supply, you should encounter few problems with it over its lifespan. But there is no way to avoid all malfunctions, and it’s likely that at some point you will need to call for professionals to repair your water heater. Here are a few indications to look out for that will tell you to pick up the phone and call plumbing professionals:

I. A drop in hot water volume

If you’ve lived with the same water heater for long enough, you’ll have a good idea of its limits, usually measured by how much hot water is available for morning showers. Should the amount of hot water available abruptly plunge, it usually means a major malfunction in the system. One common reason for this to occur is a broken dip tube that is allowing cold water to mix at the top of the tank where the hot water is supposed to exit. It could also mean problems with the gas burners, or for an electric water heater, a failed heating element.

II. Water discoloration

When you turn on the hot water taps and you see reddish-brown color in the water, it can indicate a number of different repair issues in the water heater. Excess sediment could have gotten into the tank, or rust could be affecting components. Call Pelletier Mechanical Services at (860) 283-0316 for repair technicians as soon as possible.

III. Rumbling water tank

If you use a storage tank water heater—and the majority of homes do—a rumbling sound from the tank is never a good sign. Although you shouldn’t panic (it is rare for a water heater tank to burst) you still need to have repairs done ASAP. The tank may be overheating, or cold and hot water are mixing at the top of the tank.

Please don’t attempt to diagnose and repair a water heater on your own, especially not a natural gas model. Only professionals have the training and equipment to do this job.
